Helium Technology and the Cougar High Country RV

Camper Queen on Nov-29-2011

What is Helium Technology?

Helium Technology is a way of thinking….a way of thinking lighter weight.  Every aspect of construction and floor plan choices are carefully thought out to give the customers just as much or more RV with less weight without compromising, but enhancing, structural integrity, quality and price point.

High Country’s Helium Technology utilizes advanced materials and manufacturing technology to significantly reduce weight while maintaining all the features, comforts and ruggedness you expect in a Cougar. With Helium technology you save up to 2000 pounds compared to comparably equipped fifth wheels, saving you wear and tear on your tow vehicle, improving fuel economy and maximizing your trucks towability.

Some notable features that are examples of weight saving technology:

  1. Use of 2” aluminum framed laminated floor with Italian Poplar floor decking vs. 5/8” DynaSpan seamless floor decking in regular Cougars fifth wheels
  2. Use of Norco Accu-Slide light weight slide system vs. motor/ gear driven   Link to Norco Accu-Slide
  3. 5” rise stamped steel roof rafters, 16” OC vs. 5” fabricated rafters, 16” OC
  4. Furniture is specially designed for optimum weight savings.  For example, dinette chairs are durable aluminum framed and the master bed box spring is webbed
  5. The cabinet styles are light-weight, Italian Poplar core that is pre-drilled and screwed
  6. The side walls are 2” aluminum framed with foam block insulation but used a light-weight Italian Poplar wood for the interior and exterior substrate vs. Luan which is used in the Cougar models and the fiberglass exterior is Filon Select High gloss gray fiberglass.

From research, it appears that most of the weight savings is from using the BAL cable slides but also using more and lighter composite materials resulting in a typical unit weight reduction of 900-1400lbs.

Trailer Hitch Classes

The Camper Couple on May-31-2010

There are 5 different classes of trailer hitches to choose from.  Each class is sorted by the amount of weight that can be pulled safely.  You should choose a hitch that meets your current maximum towing needs but also consider your towing needs in the future.  You might be towing wave runners this year but a speed boat next year.  Always choose the higher class hitch if you are unsure which hitch to get.   Click on each hitch class to get more information.

Class 1 Hitch: Gross trailer weight up to 2000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 200 lbs.  This type of hitching fits all vehicles.

Class 2 Hitch: Gross trailer weight up to 3500 lbs. Tongue weight up to 350 lbs.  This type of hitching fits mid-sized cars, trucks, vans and SUVs.

Class 3 Hitch: Gross trailer weight up to 5000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 500 lbs.  This type of hitching fits mid-sized trucks, vans and SUVs.

Class 4 Hitch: Gross trailer weight up to 12000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 1200 lbs.  This type of hitching fits full-sized cars, trucks, vans and SUVs.

Class 5 Hitch: Gross trailer weight up to 13000 lbs. Tongue weight up to 1300 lbs. This type of hitching fits pickup trucks only.

Check the tow ratings and towing capacity for your tow vehicle as not all vehicles can tow all classes of hitches.   Always pick a hitch that is rated to handle the maximum total weight of the camper or trailer that you plan to tow but that it does not exceed the towing capacity of your tow vehicle.  Your owner’s manual should list the maximum towing and tongue weight that your vehicle can pull.  If you have any questions, call your tow vehicles manufacturer.

Some Quick Tips for Buying Camper Trailers

The Camper Couple on May-26-2010

If you are thinking of buying a camper trailer or fifth wheel, you’re not alone. Hundreds of thousands of Americans buy new RVs every year.

Because many of these new RV buyers don’t do their homework, they have very bad experiences. Many of these new camper owners buy camper trailers that don’t really meet their needs or they lose thousands of dollars by being taken advantage of by a dishonest salesman or dealer. Another problem that many new and experienced buyers face is overpaying on financing, warranties or insurance.

Those buyers that do their due diligence on buying camper trailers can have a great experience.  They choose the camper or fifth wheel that is right for them and don’t let an unscrupulous sales person talk them into a camper they really don’t want.  A smart buyer will negotiate a lower price with the dealer and save hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on the camper they want.

This report is written to give you ideas to think about when it comes to purchasing a camper.  It is written to help you have a pleasant camper buying experience and get the camper of your dreams.

Choosing Camper Trailers or Fifth Wheel Campers

The camper that best suits you will vary from person to person.  You should consider your budget, your tow vehicle, the number of people that will stay on a regular basis and how often you will use the camper.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

Choosing the Right Camper Dealers

Most people get excited about finding their “dream” camper and don’t consider the camper dealers where they are buying their camper.

It is very important to choose a good dealership.  There are many good and honest dealers who are passionate about what they do and will give you a great buying experience as well as great “after-purchase” service.  Look for dealership that is established and been in business for a long time.  Get recommendations from your friends or other people that own campers.

Choosing the Right Brand

There are dozens of RV manufacturers so you will want to make sure that you are buying from a reputable and well established company.  There are several companies that have been in business for many years and have a secure business that can stand behind their product and backup their warranties.

However, there are many smaller businesses that have not been established for very long and don’t have a long track record showing their camper quality or their ability to stand behind their product.  That doesn’t mean that they are bad companies, just be sure that you are getting a well built camper.

It’s really best to stick to the major brands who generally have a broad network of dealers to support you.

How to Get a Great Deal

Don’t be afraid to ask for their best deal.  Most dealers have the campers marked up enough that they can afford to come down a little bit.  They know everyone wants to get a deal.

If they won’t come down on the price of the camper, see if they can throw in a free battery, or a propane fill-up.  If you need hitching, maybe they can discount the cost.

Some dealers really do show their lowest price and don’t have room to come down but it never hurts to ask.

Financing Recommendations

There is nothing wrong with financing your travel trailer or fifth wheel.  Actually, it might be a smart move to finance your camper.  You are probably asking “Why would it be smart to have another bill?”.  Campers that are considered self-contained can be considered a second home.  That means that you can write off the interest paid on your taxes.  Now, most RV finance companies don’t automatically send out interest statements at the end of each year so you will probably have to call and request a statement.  So basically, in the end, you are borrowing money and it’s not costing you any finance charges. Making a checklist before camping in your camper trailer

The Camper Couple on Apr-6-2010

Are you planning a camping trip? Have you taken the time to create a checklist? If you have not done this, you will want to do so. A checklist helps you have all the supplies for your camping trip with your camper trailer.
When creating the checklist for yourself, your list will depend on your own personal preferences. Do not rely on checklists that you can print off the internet. They can serve as great starting point, but personalize your list for your family so that it includes what to bring. To get you started, a few supplies that you should definitely stock up on for your next camping trip is listed below.
Where food and drink is the subject, there is no harm in overstocking these Items. Although this thought is something you don’t want, it is important taking emergencies, like being stranded into consideration. Always have lots of bottled water on hand. Water is always good to have in the event of an emergency; it can be used for more than just drinking, like cleaning a cut out or to wash hands with and so on. Other drinks on your checklist will depend on personal choices such as soda, milk, or juices.
When it comes to food, it is always a good idea to have some full meals available for your trip, but don’t forget the snacks. You should stock up on non-perishable foods, like canned foods and instant foods, also known as freeze dried foods. These are meals that can be consumed without having to cook them. If your trip involves spending a lot of time on the road, and not being stationed in a campground or park, simple foods are the wisest choices to have on hand.
When it comes to emergencies, you can never have too much stock on first aid supplies for your camping trip. No matter where you are it is important to remember that the risk of injury increases when doing activities like camping or hiking. That is why your camper trailer should be fully stocked with first aid supplies. Make sure that you purchase one that is suitable for you size camper and family. It is important to have enough supplies to go around for everyone.
Toiletries are another item you don’t want to run short on. Items such as towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and medications and so on.
Of course, don’t forget your clothes. Clothing is an important part of a camping trip. You will want to have clothing and other items that can assist you in the event of bad weather as well. These items should include anything from raincoats, mud boots, and a jackets or sweater.
As stated above, everything is as equally as important as the next thing but just as a reminder, creating a checklist, preferably well in advance of your trip, will help to make sure you didn’t forget anything and can have a good time.

Used RV Campers Means Great Buys

The Camper Couple on Mar-5-2010

Despite the fact that some RV campers are no longer brand new, doesn’t mean that it won’t work for a family to use. There are actually a lot of great deals on used campers but it is important to educate yourself on what to look for before a purchase. Knowing the difference between normal wear & tear and signs of abuse can be very beneficial. This will help to make sure that you get your money’s worth and to make you more confident when buying used RV campers.

After a few repairs and some minor adjustments along with some cleaning, many used campers can be like new again. It will not even be obvious that it was just passed on to you for pennies on the dollar. When you are ready to get a camper, you can find lots of real bargains out there if you just take your time and look. You could even have some friends or family keep an ear open for someone that has a deal waiting to happen.
An example of a great buy would be, a person buys a 1987 Wildcat for… let’s say $500 dollars. A new step is needed, a new set of tires and a lot of soap and water along with some scrubbing. After you have done the repairs, you just made this little trailer a winner that a family can use for years. You may also want to upgrade the awnings and cabinets to give it a more modern look. Most of the manufacturers and RV camper dealers stock inexpensive parts for campers. Companies like Couches Campers in Middletown, Ohio carry parts and repair kits for many of the modern campers as well as some of the older models. If they don’t have the part you need in stock, they may be able to order it for you. Now that you have repaired and upgraded this used camper, you will probably be able to sell it for more than what you have invested in it when ready to upgrade to a newer camper. That to me is a great buy.

When looking for used RV campers, look at some local news papers or online classified ads in your area. Many newspapers include camper advertisements in with the Boats, RVs and Motorcycles classified section. They may also be found in the general classifieds or even automotive sections. There is always a list of used RV campers on eBay.com as well as the many online classified forums. You can even look on Craigslist.org. You may directly call or visit RV dealers such as Couches Campers in Middletown, Ohio because they get used campers in trade when someone buys a new travel trailer or fifth wheel. Wherever you look, it is necessary to be a smart shopper and know how to spot real value so you can get a good deal.
Make sure your tow vehicle is rated to pull the camper you want to buy. Most owner manuals will list the tow rating for your vehicle or you can find it online at www.trailerlife.com. You will need to find the trailer’s weight. If you are buying it from a dealer, they should be able to tell you. If you buy it from a private seller, many times they will have a weight slip or have the weight noted on their current registration.
Before you finally decide to name a price for those used RV campers, ask a lot of questions and kick the tires, that way, when you do buy your camper, you will be ready to hit the road to your campsite.
